This course is designed to promote the skills needed to lead an organisation. It is also aimed at those not following the officer career path but working in a role that impacts the delivery of onboard or shore-based operations.

  1. Principles of the Human Element, Leadership, and Management
    • Understand and differentiate between the principles of the Human Element, Leadership, and Management.
  2. Managing and Mitigating Safety Risks
    • Recognise, reflect on, and take steps to mitigate risks and avoid safety incidents.
    • Manage reports to ensure the same.
  3. Managing Performance Influencing Factors (PIFs)
    • Identify and manage Performance Influencing Factors.
  4. Positive Teamwork
    • Demonstrate leadership and management skills.
    • Create conditions for effective teamwork and demonstrate communication skills.
  5. Human Element within Safety Culture: Policies and Procedures
    • Evaluate and implement relevant policies and procedures.
  6. Organisational Culture
    • Debate the evolution and impact of organisational culture on safety.
    • Identify personal responsibilities as an influencer of that culture.
  7. Shipboard Resource Management
    • Manage self, others, workload, resources, and machinery/equipment.
    • Ensure team progression and understand human-system interaction.

The instructor uses lectures, case studies, and team exercises, which form part of the assessment, to encourage future Masters and Chief Engineers to think about how to build a safe and effective team.

Requirements:
  • If you are following the deck/engineering stcw COC route, O HELM and 6 months sea going service is required.
  • For those NOT following the deck/engineering COC route but are working in a role that has an impact on the delivery of on board or shore based operations, there is no entry requirements for this course , and you will be issued with a non stcw certificate
  • Sufficient level of spoken and written English to understand the course content and to pass any verbal or written assessments.
