Motor yachts offer great fun on the water and are the preferred vessel type for many charterers. However, for a discerning handful of romantics, sailing is still the only way to experience the true majesty of being at sea, especially if the yacht is a classic with a lifetime of stories to tell.
Built in 1927 by Wiener Werft, Trinakria is a true classic. Trinakria is a legendary gaff-rigged schooner who has lived through the Second World War and starred on the silver screen in several vintage movies.
To be on board Trinakria is to touch the lives of several generations of history, from her younger years as a training vessel for a fisheries school in Bulgaria to her blossoming as the largest private yacht in Germany under the care of a new owner who was the first to convert her into a luxurious home to cruise in.
In 1951, Trinakria was sold to a new owner in Monaco. In the 1970s, she started a new life as a charter yacht, regularly hired for films and cruises in Cannes.
It was 2004 when her current owner fell in love with her elegant lines and began his labour of love to completely refit the yacht, including a total re-masting and rigging. His dream was to maintain every last drop of her classic style but offer the advantage of modern technology and comfort to anyone lucky enough to live on board.
Trinakria’s engines were entirely rebuilt, and her interiors returned to their former glory. The warm polished woods, classic white planked ceilings and crafted leather furnishings of her interior exude a type of class and nostalgia that simply cannot be found on newer yachts.
Today, that very same owner still proudly offers Trinakria to the charter market, and the captain who supervised her refit 20 years ago still stands proudly at the helm, sailing his charter guests past the stunning Mediterranean coastlines he has been cruising for decades.
The types of charter guests that Trinakria attracts vary from families who love being the most eye-catching yacht in the port to classic yacht appreciators who enjoy a trip of a lifetime on a real-life piece of history under huge, magnificent sails.
Every year, without fail, Trinakria can be seen settled at anchor, serenely watching her fellow classic yachts race at regattas like Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. She can host up to 70 guests at a quayside event and sleeps ten guests onboard in her five well-appointed staterooms.
