STCW Refresher Training - Don’t Leave It Too Late!
The STCW 2010 requires that the STCW basic and advanced training courses, which are over 5 years old, must be refreshed by January 2017. This means that you have until December 31st 2016 to update your courses over 5 years old!
Recently we have been hearing a lot of confusion from crew about refresher courses. To clarify – you don’t have to re-sit your entire STCW basic training, you will only be required to update your Basic Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Advanced Fire Fighting and Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats (restricted) (previously known as Advanced Sea Survival).
Advanced Fire Fighting – 0.5 day (with self declaration that you have completed required fire drills)
Advanced Sea Survival – 0.5 day (with self declaration that you have completed required sea drills)
This can be a 1-day course when combined.
If you take the bundle of the basic and advanced refreshers courses, this will be 3 days.
The Med season is coming and maritime schools all over the globe are being inundated with refresher training bookings. Our advice would be to not leave it too late. Winter is already a hectic training season and everyone will be aiming to use that time to refresh their courses before December, don’t leave it too late otherwise you might not be able to secure a place.
