What is PDSD and who needs it?
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) is a course required for all seafarers who have designated security duties onboard a vessel that complies with ISPS (International Ship and Port Facilities Security).
You will learn the following during this interactive PDSD course:
- Why security is important aboard a vessel and the roles of the various organisations and individuals involved;
- What constitutes a threat, how to recognise it and what to do;
- The formal procedures involved, and the processes required;
- What equipment can be used to assist in this task and how it can help us;
- How to plan, prepare, monitor and carry out security duties.
Upon completion of the course, the seafarer will be able to maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan, recognise security risk and threats, undertake regular security inspections and properly use security equipment and systems.
This course has been approved by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is internationally recognised.

What does the course include: • All learning materials are provided with the course. • It is made up of videos, animations, interactive learning activities and detailed PDFs. At the end of the course, you will: • Have acquired the knowledge required by the Merchant Navy Training Board Security Courses Criteria. • Fully understand your roles and responsibilities under the Ship Security Plan. What you need to know: • The course takes approximately 8 hours to work through in total; • You can complete the course content in your own time; • The exam can be scheduled online with an invigilator; • You also have the option to take the exam in one of our training centres in Antibes or Palma; • Bluewater ONE Account vouchers can be used to purchase this course; • There are three attempts at the exam included in the price.
