In the first job hunt, it is easy to lose hope, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel... Destinations that you have only ever dreamt of before. In this series, we catch up with senior crew that have travelled extensively thanks to their careers in yachting. In this case, we have chosen to interview the spectacular Chief Stew Milly, who has been actively working in yachting for five years.
Yes, I have always loved to travel. Since I was young, my Mum always told me how important it is to go out and see the world, which stayed with me my entire youth. I went overseas a lot as a child due to my extended family being overseas. I backpacked Europe solo when I was 23 and have been to countless other places since I finished high school.
It is an excellent combination of seeing the world while having the ability to save a lot of money, so it is a win-win. I struggled to save money while living and working a land-based job in Sydney, Australia. Yachting seemed like a fantastic way to break that cycle.
Anywhere not too cold. Nothing worse than trying to fit Summer & Winter clothes into one suitcase.
Good question! Northern Europe would be excellent and unique. I would also love to do a season around Costa Rica and Canada.
I always miss my friends and family, but they support me and my choices (despite constantly asking when I am coming home). My friends and I respect each other’s careers and life paths, and we always reunite at the end!
It depends on how long the boat plans on being there. If it is a whole season, I will plan unique activities, but if we stay for a few days, I go with the flow.
I have a yachting-related Instagram that I started in 2017 when I was a green stew @millyatsea. Unfortunately, as I move into more senior roles or HOD, I have less time to be creative or to stand back and enjoy beautiful tablescapes and magical sunsets. However, I always encourage the younger stews to document their work for future ideas and to present it as a portfolio to future vessels.
Absolutely! I have a soundtrack for so many periods of life. 3 Nights by Dominic Fike reminds me of my first time in Florida.
Unfortunately, we are here to work, not to play. As much as it can be disappointing, the crew always have the option to come back to the location during annual leave or after the season ends. It is what it is!
Cruising into New York City on a yacht can feel very glamorous!
Packing cells have been a lifesaver! I cannot imagine packing without them!
I hate packing, but I always try to be calm and organised by using a list on my phone and a glass of wine.
Anywhere that surprises guests with its beauty is a winner. One of my favourite islands is Taha’a in French Polynesia. French Polynesia is stunning, even if you do not visit Bora Bora.
I have done many shipyards, but my favourites would be Rivergate in Australia, Rybovich in West Palm Beach, and LMC & Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale.
Personally, no. I enjoy having a break between seasons so you can feel refreshed and ready to take on the next challenges. Over the last few years, I have focused on spending more time with friends and family, taking breaks from yachting as needed.
I will try anything once. For example, my partner and I just returned from a holiday in South Africa, and while we were there, we ate Ox Tongue, warthog, springbok, and Kudu.
It would be hard to say no to another season in Alaska. Unfortunately, we went during COVID, so we could not stop in Canada. Everything up there is breathtaking!
It looks like we will be going to the Med in 2023. I have crossed my fingers for Northern Europe, but we shall see. My goals for 2023 include buying our first property and seeing the Northern lights. It will be a big year!
