The Bluewater recruitment team are based in Antibes, Palma and Fort Lauderdale. We get an insight in to how they work and explore what you can do to land your dream job.
WHAT’S THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR A JOB?
Laurie: Come for an interview, apply to jobs online and email us. The Captains or Heads of Department (HODs) will conduct the interviews after we send them a selection of candidates along with references and certificates.
This process can be very quick, especially if it is an urgent job, or on a smaller boat, or it can take longer if many people are involved including management companies.
I’VE CHECKED IN BUT NOT HEARD BACK. WHY?
Jessica: Checking in is great but if you’re in town then we’d love to see you, or at least have a chat on the phone.
With thousands of crew checking in daily with us, a personal phone call goes a long way!
Laurie: There could be many reasons - because your profile is not up to date or not complete, because we don’t have the right position for you for the moment, or we may have sent your CV out but haven’t heard anything back as yet. We ask you not to give up on the search with us, if we have a completed profiles for you and you’ve checked-in, we’ll be working hard behind the scenes to find your dream job!
I DON’T MEET ALL THE CRITIERA, CAN I STILL APPLY?
Sharon: It depends! Each job is different.
A lot of the time, particularly for deck and engineering positions, the manning requirements have to be enforced therefore there’s no point applying for Y3 positions when you have an AEC.
If the yacht is private, or if we know that whilst you lack the criteria you would fit in perfectly with the existing crew dynamics, then perhaps there may be some leeway.
Laurie: The criteria can be strict indeed, if the yacht requests someone with a specific visa, certificate, or experience, they won’t consider a candidate who doesn’t have them…But if most of the requests are met and the candidate has an extra skill, or they had a great interview with us, and we know they would be perfect for the job, then we will always push their application.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I CLICK THE CHECK-IN BUTTON?
Are you notified or do I get added to a search list?
Natalie: Every time you click the check-in button, you get to the top of our database.
The longer you choose not to check in, the further down the list you go, this is in case you have secured employment but haven’t had time to update your profile. So if you are still looking, make sure you keep letting us know!
After 30 days your profile is put into hibernation.
Laurie: You go back up to the top of the list of candidates! Which is the perfect way for us to understand you are still actively looking for a job (without needing to visit us in the office) and for our ONE account boats to see you immediately in their search list too.
HOW OFTEN ARE YOU CHECKING YOUR DATABASE FOR AVAILABLE CREW?
Sharon: Between all the crew agents working at Bluewater in Fort Lauderdale, Antibes and Palma, we are searching the database pretty much around the clock!
WHY DO I NEED TO KEEP CHECKING-IN?
Laurie: To keep your profile active and at the top of the list of candidates. To be more visible to both crew agents and ONE account subscribers.
Natalie: Bluewater has a large selection of jobs available around the world. Not only do yachts and management companies come to us for their crewing needs, but we also place crew on the Bluewater charter and management fleet yachts.
Bluewater offers a ONE Account subscription service, which allows yachts to access our database to search for crew themselves and post job vacancies, with our recruitment agents assisting them when needed.
There are currently over 300 yachts subscribed to the ONE Account and their Captains and HODs can contact you directly if your profile is a good match for their team.
By signing up with Bluewater to look for work, you are multiplying your chances of finding that perfect job.
We also speak to yachts around the world regularly, checking-in to see if they need any crew, so we’re constantly working on both sides of recruitment; proactively matching crew to yachts, and reaching out to yachts when we have a great crew member they might be interested in interviewing.
But always keep in mind, when a crew member is looking confidentially, their status is hidden from everyone except us and we maintain the utmost discretion.
Thank you ladies for sharing an insight in to how hard you work behind the scenes to match crew to yachts.
If you haven’t spoken to one of our crew agents since you secured your first role, why not pop in to one of our offices in Antibes, Fort Lauderdale or Palma and have chat. The team will check the jobs coming in, listen to what you really want from your next role, and help you find your dream role with a great crew.
