Nearly all the beaches on Formentura allow naturist bathing. There are plenty of sights to see away from the beaches on the Island, beautiful walks, historical small villages and some good restaurants. This is the ideal place for windsurfing enthusiasts as Formentera hosted the World windsurfing Championships in 2007.
Exploring Formentura by charter yacht
In the north of this small island is an even smaller Island called Espalmador. There is only a shallow sandbar which separates the two islands and during a low tide it is possible to walk across to the other island. The pass is called the Pas d'en Adolf and is less than one meter in depth. If the weather is bad it is still possible to reach the island by a small boat from Savina port. It has become a popular place for yachts to stop and enjoy these truly turquoise clear seas and white sandy dunes.Next to Savina Port, through a very small channel, which only small boats can pass is the calm and secluded cove of S'Estany d'Es Peix. The waters are shallow here being only 3 meters deep and are popular for practising water sports. Also there are some spectacular cliffs on the eastern side of the island. It is very popular to rent bikes and cycle through the pine forests and explore its hidden spots.
Beaches of Formentura
When deciding which beach to choose it is important to check which direction the wind is blowing. A northerly direction means that the southerly beaches will be well protected that day, and the waters will be calm for bathing. The Island is increasing being managed as a national park and conservationists are keeping the sand dunes and the seashore areas protected as areas of scientific interest.Espalmador has its own sulphur mud spa area, renowned for the muds having good skin healing properties and is a popular place for people to visit. The beach is called S'Alga or seaweed corner. The natural salt marshes at Ses salines with its rocky headlands and coves holds an abundance of marine birds and a wonderful place for ornithologists. The area can get strong easterly winds which produce a dangerous smell so bathing with caution has to be taken here.
One of the longest beaches is at the Platja de Llevant which has a beach 1540 meters long. There are two rocky cliffs and headlands at an area known as Raco de ses Ampolles. The waters again are crystal clear and the colours from the seaweed covering the rocks throw up deeper blues and greens. It is an area of natural beauty with the backdrop of pines. With strong winds that can be prevalent from the east bathing here can be dangerous.
A safe and quiet area for bathing is at Cala Saona beach which has a gentle slope and the sea is well protected from the winds by the headlands and calm.
On the north coast of Formentera you can find a quiet and calm u-shaped inlet, which is surrounded by high rocky cliffs. This is a quiet spot ideal for those people wanting to escape the tourist crowds. On the southern coast of the island the beaches offer a combination of coves and inlets, sandy beaches which are not overcrowded. The beach to head for is known as Migjorn beach. This beach has an interior of thick pines and bushes, with posidonia meadows on the higher ground. It has also become one of the best gourmet dining areas on the Island.
